Some MVPs make the biggest impact not on the court, but in the lives of those they love.
Meet Karen, a dedicated caregiver who stood by her husband’s side throughout his cancer journey. After experiencing firsthand the challenges families face, she now donates and volunteers with the Abdominal Cancers Alliance to help others navigating abdominal cancer.
💙 Why does she give back? In her own words:

"When asked why I give my time and resources to this organization, two main reasons come to mind 1. to show my deep appreciation for the surgeon and medical team who saved my husband, John’s, life and 2. because I fully believe in the life-saving capabilities of the HIPEC treatment and I want it to connect more people in need.
My name is Karen Druffel, and I am both a donor and a board member of the Abdominal Cancers Alliance. More importantly, I am a caregiver to my husband, John, who has undergone HIPEC surgery twice.
John and I were fortunate to find Dr. Sardi through our local community—a dear friend directly connected us to Mercy Hospital after I shared John’s diagnosis. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for most people. That’s why I am passionate about the work we are doing at the Abdominal Cancers Alliance. Through our Patient and Caregiver Network, online resource hub, and growing programs, we are expanding access to critical information and support, ensuring that more patients and families can find the right treatment as quickly as possible.
To go from a moment of being told my husband has stage 4 cancer to now doing an interview 10 years later... this is why I do what I do.
It is a gift to be able to share my experience as a caregiver in a positive way, to celebrate life, and to give hope to others facing an abdominal cancer diagnosis. Because of HIPEC, John and I have had 10 more years of mountain biking, traveling, and making memories with our children—and we have no plans to stop living this beautiful life together anytime soon!"
Karen’s story is a testament to the power of caregivers and the difference one person can make. Join her in bringing hope, resources, and support to families in need.
